I Am Not My Hair (Or Lack Of).

As a woman, our hair becomes a part of us, our identity. Whether we wear it short, long, big, etc. For some of us, the longer we let it grow, the more it hurts us when we let it go. I’ve never had really long hair. I just don’t think my hair grows like that, let’s be honest here. I like shorter hair though. Well, let’s say some time ago I liked it short enough to do two-strand twists, and all of that. Something like this.

She’s Gotta Have It, but Can She Have It All?

So by now (hopefully), you’ve all binge watched this incredible Netflix series. Spike Lee doesn’t disappoint, at least not with this updated version of the original 1986 film She’s Gotta Have It. Did you know that was his first feature length film? He also starred as Mars, my favorite character in the Netflix series. Let me first say, he grew on me because during the first episode I couldn’t stand him.

It’s been a year.

So, it’s been a year and it feels like I was just picking up that SUV and hitting the road to check off yet another goal on my list. Sometimes, I still can’t believe I’m here. Even with the crowded trains, Mickey and Minnie on the train tracks, small apartments, guys yelling “Yo Ma” at every block, hitting up random premieres with and without appearances of the stars that will grace your screen, rushing to the laundromat (or sending your clothes out – because really, who has in unit washer and dryer here?). Plus more.

Thank you for being a friend!

So, I’m a Golden Girls fan. I could literally watch that show everyday for the rest of my life. So, when I heard there was going to be a GG themed cafe, I made the trek to Washington Heights (a long way from Brooklyn by train) to see what it was about.

Picture it…NYC 2017.

It’s called Rue La Rue Cafe and I loved it!! It is pretty small, like everywhere else in NY, so don’t let that scare you off. It was a soft-opening when I went but SO packed. They had a lot of Rue McClanahan’s (AKA Blanche) clothing and memorabilia so it was kind of centered off of her. A close friend of hers, Michael LaRue, is a co-owner.

I’m not ashamed to say that I’m not a big cheesecake fan, BUT I did get the chocolate cheesecake with a Bellini – both were good! While in line (you didn’t think you could just walk right in, right?), Michael came out with one of their signature items – buttermilk biscuits with strawberry butter. Let’s just say, I took some home. 😋

Oh, and in case you didn’t think this place could get any better, they play Golden Girls episodes ALL. DAY. LONG. Well…duh!

I’ll definitely be back this summer, when I’m prepared to stand in line outside. 😫

Wallpaper just like in the show!
Look familiar? Yep, it’s just like the girls’ bathroom!
